Legal Self-Representation: Do I Really Need To Hire A Lawyer?

Not every legal matter will require you to hire an attorney. The truth is hiring a lawyer can prevent common mistakes that can occur in self-representation. You could be a well-educated individual and still need to hire an attorney. In fact, most attorneys often hire another attorney to represent him/her in a legal matter.

Can I Just Google The Law?

Google can be a good starting resource, but as I’m sure you have heard: “Don’t believe everything you read on the Internet.” The law is constantly evolving. It is important to know where to look as well as how to ensure the information being provided is accurate.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a potential client tell me that he/she is familiar with the law because he/she watches a lot of court television. I am here to tell you that reality is the practice of law is nothing like you see on television. If you don’t know all of the rules (especially local rules), or proper decorum then you might end up doing something detrimental to your case and costing yourself more money in the long run.

What Can A Lawyer Provide?

The law is never black and white. Every situation will have a different set of facts that can have an impact on the outcome of your case. Often times you will hear an attorney respond with “it depends” when asked a legal question because the answer really does depend on several factors.

The value lawyers provide is an in depth knowledge of the law, an understanding of the legal processes, and the ability to tie all of that together with a strategy that best fits your situation.

Pull Your Teeth Or Have A Dentist Do It For You?

If you need your teeth removed, you would see a dentist or an oral surgeon. It will probably hurt less, and you will probably feel much better than you did if you were to try to remove them on your own. In the same way, if you are going to court, it is likely going to hurt much less if you have a lawyer on your side.
